Joe has been a longtime advocate of veterans' initiatives since receiving an Honorable Discharge from the U. S. Air Force in 1974. He recently completed 2.5 years as a Commissioner, having been appointed to the Veterans Disability Benefits Commission by the Honorable Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, where he participated in a complete review of the system of benefits awarded to veterans disabled from injuries incurred during military service.
He currently serves as the Treasurer of the VET-Force, Legislative Liaison and Regional Director for the National Association for Black Veterans and as Senior Advisor to the Director of Government Affairs and Policy for the Vietnam Veterans of America on matters pertaining to veterans' entrepreneurship, employment preference, training, and vocational rehabilitation.
Joe is a member of the Mayor's Veterans Advisory Board for the District of Columbia, Chairman of the Armed Services & Veterans Affairs Committee for the NAACP-DC Branch, and member of the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.
In 2004, Joe founded the VETS Group, a non-profit organization that provides entrepreneurial education, federal procurement training, and supportive services for veterans and service-disabled veterans interested in starting or expanding their own small businesses. Over the past few years, Joe has organized seminars and conferences at universities and community centers as a continuing effort to educate veterans, agency representatives, and members of the community about the needs and capabilities of veterans and their families. His activities have been supported by Congress, veterans' organizations, businesses, federal, state, and local governments.
Military Service
Served in the US Air Force for the 66th Strategic Missile Squadron during the Vietnam-era. He also served on the Human Relations Council for the Air Force.
Educational Attainment
Under the G.I. Bill, Joe attended the University of the District of Columbia where he completed a Bachelor's degree in Computer Systems, an MBA in Business, two years at Howard University studying for a doctorate in Organizational Communications. He later served as Director of Education at the PTC Career Institute, a business school in Washington, D.C.
Awards
NAACP 2006 Julius E. Williams Distinguished Community Svc Award for Veteran's; SBA's Veteran Small Business Champion Award for 2005; and in 2002, Joe shared the Distinguished Service Award from the Center for Veterans Enterprise.
